The Ultimate Parent Checklist: 15 Questions to Ask Before Enrolling in Student Care

Most parents walk into a student care centre tour with one question in mind: "Is this a nice place?"
That's the wrong question, or at least, not enough of one. A clean, friendly-looking centre can still fall short on the things that actually matter day to day: who's supervising your child, how homework is actually handled, what happens on a bad day.
This checklist is built to take the guesswork out of comparing centres. Bring it with you on every visit, the answers (and how confidently they're given) will tell you more than any brochure.
Educators
Ask: What experience do the educators have?
A centre is only as good as the people in the room. Ask how staff are trained and how they handle children with different personalities and learning needs, not just their general qualifications.
Supervision
Ask: How are children supervised throughout the day?
Get specifics: Is it one continuous supervisor, or does it change between activities? How is attendance tracked?
Homework
Ask: Is homework actively monitored and reviewed?
There's a real difference between a child sitting quietly for an hour and a child whose work is actually checked. Ask what happens when something's wrong.
Learning Support
Ask: What happens when a child cannot understand a question?
This single question reveals a lot. Do they explain the concept, or hand over the answer? The former builds understanding; the latter just finishes the worksheet.
Class Size
Ask: How many children does each educator supervise?
A lower ratio generally means more individual attention, ask this directly rather than assuming from the room size.
Daily Routine
Ask: How are homework, meals, play and rest balanced?
An all-academic day exhausts children; an all-play day doesn't build habits. Ask for an actual example of how a typical afternoon is structured.
Safety
Ask: What are the arrival, dismissal and emergency procedures?
Cover authorised pickups, illness protocols, and what happens in an emergency. A centre that answers this clearly and immediately has clearly thought it through.
Meals
Ask: Are meals included, and can dietary needs be accommodated?
Confirm what's provided, whether it's enough given your child's school-day schedule, and how allergies or dietary restrictions are handled.

Character Development
Ask: How are responsibility and independence encouraged?
Academic results aren't the only outcome worth asking about. Ask for concrete examples, not just "we teach good values."
Parent Communication
Ask: How frequently will I receive updates?
Daily log, weekly summary, or only when something goes wrong? Decide what level of visibility you actually want, then check the centre matches it.
Holiday Care
Ask: What programmes operate during school holidays?
School holidays rarely line up with annual leave. Confirm whether full-day coverage is available in March, June, September and December, and whether it costs extra.
Transport
Ask: Are school pickup arrangements available?
Don't assume. Confirm which schools are covered and how pickup is managed, especially if your child's school isn't within easy walking distance.
Academic Support
Ask: Are structured English, Chinese, Mathematics and Science sessions included, or just general homework supervision?
This is the question that separates centres offering real academic reinforcement from ones that are purely supervisory.
Fees
Ask: What is included, and what costs extra?
Get this in writing: registration, deposits, meals, materials, enrichment, holiday programmes and withdrawal notice periods. A centre confident in its value will lay this out clearly.
Enrolment
Ask: Can I visit the centre before making a decision?
Any centre that hesitates on this is telling you something. A trial visit or discovery tour should be a given, not a special favour.
One Bonus Question Worth Asking:
If academic development matters to you, add this one:
"Apart from helping my child finish homework, what additional learning support does your centre provide?"
Homework supervision and real academic reinforcement are not the same thing and this question makes a centre show you the difference, rather than just claim it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to ask all 15 questions on one visit?
Ideally, yes. Bring this list with you (print it or keep it on your phone) so you're comparing centres on the same criteria rather than relying on first impressions.
What if a centre can't answer some of these clearly?
That's useful information in itself. A centre confident in its programme should be able to answer most of these without hesitation.
